Heavy rain caught two scooter riders off guard, leading to their falls as reported by the police.

On a fateful day, August 28, two separate accidents occurred in the Rhein-Sieg District, both caused by the phenomenon known as "summer ice". This unusual weather condition, a mixture of dust and pollen, can be as dangerous as snow for road safety.

The first accident involved a 17-year-old student from Königswinter who lost control of his Peugeot scooter on state road 333 (L333) while negotiating a left curve between Hennef-Bülgenauel and the city center. The teenager was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after colliding with a guardrail.

Simultaneously, a 17-year-old student in Eitorf lost control of her Vespa due to the "summer ice" and skidded while turning into Kelterser Street. Emergency services treated her injuries on site, but unfortunately, she did not survive her accident.

The slippery conditions caused by the "summer ice" were a result of sudden heavy rain that made the roads treacherous. Tires offer only about a fifth of the grip on dry asphalt under these conditions.

The student from Eitorf had initially suffered minor injuries in her Vespa accident but unfortunately did not recover. Her name has not been disclosed in the available information.

Adapting speed and having a good tire profile can reduce the risk of accidents during "summer ice" conditions. It is crucial for drivers to be aware of the potential dangers posed by this weather phenomenon and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
