Police Officer Simon Bohr's Funeral: A Tribute to a Hero

Police Officer Simon Bohr, who was shot dead on August 21 while trying to apprehend a suspected perpetrator in Volklingen, was laid to rest in a poignant funeral service in Saarlouis. The incident, which caused nationwide shock, saw the attendance of over 1,500 to 2,000 people, including Saarländische Ministerpräsidentin Anke Rehlinger and Innenminister Reinhold Jost (both SPD), at the private funeral.

The funeral service took place in an evangelical church in Saarlouis, with a painted heart picture placed in front of a podium, bearing a photo of Officer Bohr in the choir during the service. The funeral procession, which included hundreds of police officers in uniform, made its way through the city, escorting the coffin for about 1.6 kilometers before the private burial.

Officer Bohr, who left behind a wife and two children, was described as an "incredibly positive person" by Pastor Beckers. Police President Thorsten Weiler described the current situation as one of the darkest hours for the Saarland police. Police Chaplain Hubertus Kesselheim, who also paid tribute to Officer Bohr, described him as professional, reliable, approachable, selfless, and someone who advocated for everyone, never speaking ill of others.

The funeral service was not public but was broadcast in a set-up media center. Many mourners held white roses, and tears were often visible. The service culminated in a trumpet solo of the Beatles song "Yesterday," a fitting tribute to a man whose life was tragically cut short.

The widow of Simon Bohr addressed the mourners in the funeral service, but her words were not made public. The planned central memorial service for Simon Bohr in Saarbrücken on Friday is named "Zentraler Gedenkdienst." The public prosecutor's office is currently investigating the case, including for murder.

The funeral of Officer Simon Bohr serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that our police officers face every day in the line of duty. His memory will live on, not just in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues, but also in the community he served so faithfully.
