Headline: Leicester Crown Court Hears Child Cruelty Allegations Against 76-Year-Old Man

A 76-year-old man named Jon Ruben appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Friday, charged with child cruelty offences. The charges relate to three boys at a summer camp held at Stathern Lodge, a converted farmhouse with sports hall and catering facilities, between July 25 and 29.

According to the specific allegation, the sweets were laced with sedatives. As a result, eight children and one adult were taken to the hospital as a precaution due to the incident at the summer camp. It is unclear whether officers only responded on the Monday, and whether that is why the force referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct over its handling of the incident.

Originally, the force stated that the incident happened on Monday, July 28, but later amended it to Sunday, July 27. Ruben was arrested on suspicion of administering poison or a noxious thing with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.

At a magistrates' court hearing on August 2, Ruben gave no indication of his pleas. He was remanded back into custody until the plea hearing on November 14. The plea hearing for Ruben's case has been adjourned until November 14, with the trial expected to last four weeks.

The Leicestershire Police itself referred its handling of the summer camp incident at Stathern Lodge to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. No further information is provided about the health status of the children involved. It is worth noting that the owners and operators of Stathern Lodge are not connected to the incident.

Ruben was told at a previous court hearing that he is charged with three counts of wilfully assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting, abandoning, or exposing children. The trial date for Ruben's case is set for January 27, 2023.

The public is reminded that all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
