Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka embarked on a three-day visit to India from August 24 to August 26, marking his first visit to the South Asian nation in his current capacity. Upon his arrival in the National Capital, Rabuka was received by the Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the Northeastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar.

The visit aims to further deepen the India-Fiji partnership across various sectors, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs. Rabuka is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 25, where PM Modi will be hosting a lunch in honor of the visiting dignitary.

The relationship between India and Fiji dates back to 1879 when Indian laborers, known as 'Girmitiyas', were brought to Fiji under the indenture system to work on sugarcane plantations. This system was abolished in Fiji in 1920, but it marked the beginning of a significant Indian presence in the Pacific island nation.

Between 1879 and 1916, around 60,553 Indians were brought to Fiji under the indenture system. Today, the Indian community in Fiji constitutes approximately 40% of the population.

Rabuka's visit also reaffirms the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthen the bilateral relationship across all sectors and deepen close people-to-people ties. As part of this commitment, Rabuka is scheduled to deliver a talk on 'Ocean of Peace' at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) in the national capital.

During his visit, Rabuka will also meet with Indian government officials and explore opportunities for cooperation. He is also scheduled to call on President Droupadi Murmu during his visit. Rabuka's spouse, Suluweti Rabuka, is accompanying him on his visit.

Before Fiji's independence in 1970, India had a Commissioner since 1948, who was later upgraded to High Commissioner after independence. Fiji's close ties with India have continued to grow, with Rabuka's visit serving as a testament to the strong bond between the two nations.

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda met with Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka on August 24 in New Delhi, India. During his visit, Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka was accompanied by the Minister of Health and Medical Services of Fiji, Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, and other senior officials.

Rabuka's visit to India is a significant step in strengthening the already strong relationship between the two nations. As the two countries continue to work together, the potential for further cooperation and growth is vast.
