Health authority in Berlin advises against swimming in the Great Northern Lake

In a recent press release, the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs has issued a bathing advisory for the northern bathing area of Groß Glienicker See. This body of water, located in the southwestern part of Berlin and serving as the border between Berlin and Brandenburg, has shown elevated levels of E. coli bacteria.

The presence of E. coli bacteria, which are found in the intestines of humans and animals, indicates fecal contamination of the water. This contamination can occur due to wastewater, rainwater runoff, or agricultural runoff flowing into the water. Bathing visitors or birds can also contribute to local fecal contamination.

The advisory does not affect the entirety of Groß Glienicker See, but only the northern bathing area. For all other bathing areas, including Zeuthener See, the traffic light system shows "green": "The quality is good and suitable for bathing."

The German Environment Agency has provided information on the causes of E. coli bacteria in water. Bathers are at an increased risk as these pathogens can pose a health hazard if swallowed. New samples of the water should be taken and analyzed promptly.

Elsewhere, the Lageso warned of increased algal blooms at the Schmöckwitz bathing area of Zeuthener See. Visibility may be reduced at this area due to the algal blooms. However, no new advisories were issued for Zeuthener See, and the responsible authority for issuing bathing prohibition warnings at this location typically falls to the local health department or environmental protection agency of the municipality or district in which Zeuthener See is located.

It is essential for bathers to follow the advisories issued by the authorities to ensure their safety and maintain the cleanliness of our water bodies. The Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs encourages everyone to stay informed about the quality of the water in their local bathing areas and take necessary precautions.
