Haskenau unveils a new bridge as a replacement
The city of Münster is set to unveil a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge in Haskenau on September 4, 2020. This significant addition to the local traffic network and Münster's bike network 2.0 has been meticulously designed and built by the architecture and engineering firm Zabel GmbH.
The new bridge, spanning approximately 88 meters, has been straightened in its alignment and boasts a durable steel structure. Four pre-assembled sections, each a testament to precision engineering, were transported from a factory to the construction site. The bridge's main field, the largest single component, weighs a hefty 12.5 tons and measures 35 meters in length, 3.50 meters in width, and 1.95 meters in height.
The new construction blends harmoniously with its surroundings, clad in two rich green tones. The bridge's surface is made of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP), ensuring a long-lasting structure and a slip-resistant surface for safety. A vibration damper has been installed in the main field due to the bridge's large span and lightweight construction.
The replacement construction of the bridge has cost more than two million euros, with the city of Münster financing 90% of the cost through federal funds for investments in cycling infrastructure under the "City and Country" special program.
The old wooden bridge was closed in spring 2022 due to severe structural damage. The new bridge is a crucial link in Münster's bike network 2.0, popular for both daily cycling between Handorf and Gelmer, and tourist cycling as part of the Werse cycle path.
City officials, including Mayor Markus Lewe, Peter Beidenhauser (Regional Government Münster), Udo Sieverding, Gerd Rüller, Robin Denstorff, Benedikt Spangenberg, Bodo Kensmann, Peter Wagner, and Georg Balsliemke, were present at the site inspection.
The new bridge over the Werse at Haskenau restores an important cycling link between Handorf and Gelmer, set to open for pedestrian and cyclist traffic on September 4, 2020.
