Harry Sparks' multi-faceted life: An architect, a craftsman of stringed instruments for renowned celebrities, an ADA pioneer, and more.
In the heart of Covington, Kentucky, nestled within the historic Sears building on 5th street, resides the Architectural Group International (AGI), a renowned architectural firm with a rich history. Its founder, Harry Sparks, is a name synonymous with innovation and versatility.
Born and raised in Kentucky, Sparks attended Murray State University, where his mother was the school librarian and his father an education professor. His academic journey, however, took an unexpected turn when he decided to pursue architecture, inspired by his art professor, Clara Eagle, who recognized his potential.
After 15 years at Federated, Sparks took a bold step and started his own architectural firm, AGI, with offices in the Executive Suites. One of his first significant projects was the design of the $32 million Bloomingdale's in Minnesota's Mall of America, which he completed in a record 14 months.
Sparks' work extended beyond commercial projects. He remodeled almost every Home Depot store in the nation and built or remodeled numerous retail institutions, casinos, hotels, and even the famous General Store in Rabbit Hash. His architectural prowess was showcased in a $2 million home in North Bend, Ohio, and a low-key remodel of the home he previously owned in Ryland Lakes Country Club.
Sparks' residential projects were as unique as they were impressive. He designed an Earth-sheltered, passive solar, geo-thermal house with LED lights for his personal residence. This commitment to sustainability and innovation is a testament to Sparks' forward-thinking approach to architecture.
Sparks' contributions to the field of architecture are not limited to design. His groundbreaking work on facility accessibility during the Carter administration led to his input influencing the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Apart from architecture, Sparks has a passion for sailboat racing and competitive shooting. He has won gold in the Zone Championship in Portland, Oregon, in 1997 and at the 2008 world competition in Australia. As a member of the Muzzle Loaders International Confederation (MLAIC), Sparks has participated in shooting matches across the globe.
Sparks' son, Hal Sparks, is an accomplished TV and film actor, director, singer, musician, and comedian. The Sparks family's influence extends beyond the realm of architecture, making an indelible mark on various industries.
Today, AGI is run by Tim Seaman, David Thiel, Jr., and Quin Wichmann, professionals who continue to uphold Sparks' legacy of innovation and excellence. Under their leadership, AGI has continued to shape the architectural landscape of the nation, leaving a lasting impact on the built environment.
In his own words, Sparks offers advice for success: "Keep an open mind. Things are changing so fast that you can't get in a rut or you're done. You never know what opportunity will come your way. Be flexible. I do things that I enjoy doing. Getting buildings up and everyone in them was a lot of fun. Whatever you're going to do, try to be the best. Don't do it for the recognition. Do it because you are trying to be good. Doing it for the recognition will always be the wrong reason." Sparks' wisdom, like his architectural masterpieces, continues to inspire and guide future generations.
