Harmful substances called "Eternity chemicals" discovered in breakfast eggs
The German Environmental and Nature Conservation Association (BUND) has published a study on the contamination of food with PFAS chemicals, also known as "forever chemicals." Based on data from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and BUND's own samples, the study found that eggs, fish, and offal are particularly affected by PFAS contamination.
In the study, 69 percent of fish samples, 55 percent of offal, and 39 percent of eggs showed residues. The highest PFAS concentrations in eggs were found in samples from private hobby poultry keepers. The top four most contaminated egg samples came from hobby farms, including one from Schleswig-Holstein near the sea, showing a PFAS-4 concentration up to 1.05 ยตg/kg. Commercial eggs showed lower levels, often below detection or up to 0.269 ยตg/kg.
In laboratory analysis of 22 eggs from Germany, PFAS was detected in 14 samples. These chemicals enter the food chain through contaminated soils and earthworms. The industry uses PFAS in non-stick coatings and impregnations.
Regular intake of PFAS can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Janna Kuhlmann, chemistry expert at BUND, calls for a ban on PFAS chemicals to stop further environmental contamination. BUND also criticizes that legal limit values for PFAS do not adequately protect children.
Interestingly, eggs from hobby farmers were more contaminated than those from supermarkets. Only seven percent of the tested vegetable samples were contaminated. A simple trick can be used to check if eggs are still fresh.
The study does not specify which particular producers are affected by PFAS contamination in eggs. However, the findings underscore the need for stricter regulations and industry transparency to ensure the safety of our food supply.
