Harburg District Elections: Malicious Acts as Election Posters Get Destroyed Purposefully
In the county of Harburg, a concerning pattern of vandalism against the Green Party has been unfolding, with around 20 ongoing investigations being handled by the state protection department, according to police spokesman Jan Krรผger.
The vandalism, which is being carried out under cover of darkness by a well-organized group, has affected various parties, but over 80 percent of the affected posters are promoting the Greens. The damage, estimated to have exceeded 10,000 euros, includes partial face cuts on posters of Economics Minister Robert Habeck, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbck, and Terry Reintke. Another poster of Terry Reintke was smeared with paint and covered with stickers.
The Greens' poster installer has claimed that poster stands are being damaged more and more frequently. The organization presumably behind this systematic damage is not explicitly identified, but the state protection is investigating the incidents. The damage is considered serious and possibly politically motivated, although no specific group has been named.
The police spokesman refers to the vandalism as a "campaign with the chainsaw." The vandalism against various parties is being investigated as a series of cases.
In recent years, the Greens have made few friends, particularly among farmers, due to their policies on agriculture. Germany's current economic situation, which is often blamed on the Greens, has also been a contentious issue. The party in the county of Harburg has had several large posters vandalized, with incidents reported in places like Hangelar and Lohmar.
Despite these challenges, the Greens have had to replace many vandalized posters multiple times. So far, no suspects have been identified in the vandalism cases. The number of cases is expected to continue rising.
As the election approaches, the Green Party and the authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the vandalism of political posters. The state protection department is working diligently to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
