Hannover-Misburg Operation: Successful Termination of Conflict Participant in Hannover-Misburg Area

In a significant operation, a British 500-pound bomb from World War II was successfully defused in Hannover's Misburg-South district on Monday. Dr. Axel von der Ohe, the head of Hannover's Fire Department, expressed great satisfaction with the completion of the measures.

The operation began after exploratory work on a property on Anderter Straße discovered a bomb crater at a depth of about 2 meters in a water-filled retention basin. A safety zone with a radius of 1,000 meters around the find had to be established before further investigation by specialists from the Lower Saxony Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Service could be carried out.

Gregor Fleischmann, the deputy head of Hannover's Fire Department, who was involved in the bomb disposal, noted that the bomb find presented special features, particularly the location in a body of water. The bomb was defused by a diver from the EOD at 7:43 PM after the preparatory work was completed.

Approximately 340 personnel from the fire department, police, aid organizations, and the EOD were involved in the operation. Dr. Axel von der Ohe and Mr. Fleischmann visited the operation site.

The statement was originally transmitted by the Fire Department Hannover via news aktuell. Mr. Fleischmann added that the professional work of operational forces and the excellent cooperation of the affected citizens were the best prerequisites for the smooth completion of the operation.

No injuries were reported during the operation. Around 3,350 people from the affected district were asked to leave the evacuation area from 4:30 PM. About 150 evacuees sought shelter at the care center set up at the Pestalozzi School in Eisteichweg. After the control of the explosion site, the safety zone could be lifted at 8:25 PM, and all affected residents returned to their homes.

The total number of calls received by the citizen's phone was 101 by 8:25 PM. For more information about the Fire Department Hannover, you can contact Stephan Trog at 0511/912-1405 or email [email protected]. You can also visit their website at https://www.feuerwehr-hannover.de.
