Hamburg's Mümmelmannsberg district gets €300M makeover by 2030
Hamburg's Mümmelmannsberg district is undergoing a major transformation with new housing, healthcare, and public space upgrades. Since 2011, SAGA has invested around €140 million in the area, with another €150 million planned by 2030. The latest phase includes fresh projects in housing, medical facilities, and outdoor communal areas.
The district's redevelopment began with the Urban Square redesign and a new shopping centre in 2021. These early changes aimed to revive the neighbourhood's core, while SAGA's local office also opened that year. Funding from the RISE urban development program has since supported 80 projects, totalling €62.5 million, with additional backing from the Stromaufwärts an Elbe und Bille strategy for eastern Hamburg.
Modernisation efforts have focused on energy efficiency and accessibility. At Lietbargredder, upgrades to entrances, stairwells, kitchens, and bathrooms finished in April 2025. Another 280 apartments around Große Holl and Strietkoppel will receive energy retrofits by late 2026. Meanwhile, 104 subsidised apartments are now under construction at Oskar-Schlemmer-Straße, including 80 fully accessible units under the LeNa concept. The site will also feature 24 family apartments and a 10-unit dementia care community, with groundbreaking set for summer 2026.
Healthcare access is improving with a new medical centre planned for Kandinskyallee. Scheduled to open by 2028, it will house around 15 practices, though none will operate before completion. Outdoor spaces are also being reimagined, with communal areas like the Sculpture Courtyard set to reopen in summer 2026.
By 2030, SAGA plans to invest a total of €300 million in Mümmelmannsberg's modernisation, new construction, and climate protection. The updated Master Plan introduces housing, healthcare, and public space projects to shape the district's future. Construction timelines and funding allocations remain on track for the coming years.
