Hamas receives Trump's final ultimatum: Time for negotiations?
US President Donald Trump has issued a final warning to the Islamic terrorist organization Hamas, aiming to force a diplomatic solution before Israel's impending large-scale offensive in Gaza. Trump has expressed optimism about the release of the 48 hostages held by Hamas, who have been captive for 703 days.
In a bold move, Trump's new proposal involves the handover of all 48 hostages, both living and dead, on the first day of a ceasefire. This proposal also includes the release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons, including hundreds sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of Israelis. In exchange for the handover of hostages, Israel's army will halt its offensive in Gaza.
The US President is reportedly actively engaged in efforts to end the war and has urged Hamas to immediately release the hostages. Hamas, for its part, has expressed its readiness for immediate negotiations to end the aggression against its people. Israel has accepted the conditions set by the US for a diplomatic solution.
However, the situation remains tense. Hamas continues to maintain information gathering operations within densely populated areas of Gaza, according to the Israeli military. The Israeli army has designated a humanitarian zone in the southern Gaza Strip and urged residents to move there. Relatives of the hostages held by Hamas, as well as the Israeli military leadership, fear for the safety of the captives during military operations.
Most of the living hostages are thought to be in tunnels beneath the city of Gaza. The Israeli military has continued air strikes in the northern part of Gaza City, targeting a high-rise building. As of Sunday, fewer than 100,000 people have left Gaza City.
Trump has stated that "everyone wants the hostages to be freed." He has emphasized that all of them—alive or dead—should be freed "very soon" as part of a deal, which is currently being seriously considered by Israel in exchange for the release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners and negotiations to end the war during a ceasefire.
After the declaration of a ceasefire, negotiations will begin immediately on the conditions for an end to the war. Hamas demands a clear statement on ending the war, a full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the establishment of a committee of independent Palestinians to manage the Gaza Strip as part of any ceasefire agreement.
Trump's efforts to secure the release of the hostages and end the conflict in Gaza continue to be closely watched by the international community. The fate of the hostages and the future of the Gaza Strip remain uncertain, but the hope for a peaceful resolution remains strong.
