Hamas receives Trump's final ultimatum: Is a deal attainable?
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, negotiations for a comprehensive agreement are underway, with both parties working to meet their own demands.
The latest proposal, offered by US President Joe Biden, includes the release of all living hostages within the first 48 hours after a ceasefire takes effect. This would be followed by the start of negotiations on conditions to end the war. In exchange for the hostage release, Israel's army will suspend its military offensive in the city of Gaza.
Israel is reportedly to release thousands of Palestinian prisoners, including hundreds sentenced to life for killing Israelis. Hamas, on the other hand, is ready to negotiate immediately for the release of all hostages in exchange for a clear statement on ending the war, a full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the establishment of a committee of independent Palestinians to manage the Gaza Strip.
The agreement must include a public and explicit commitment by Israel to adhere to all agreed conditions to prevent Israel from unilaterally declaring the ceasefire over and resuming the war. This is crucial, as the fighting will not resume as long as negotiations over the conditions continue.
As of Sunday, fewer than 100,000 people had left the city. Most of the living hostages are believed to be in the tunnels beneath the city of Gaza. Relatives of the hostages and the Israeli military leadership fear that a military takeover of the city could endanger the lives of the hostages.
Critics accuse Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu of unnecessarily prolonging the nearly two-year-old war. However, there was no official confirmation from Israel about accepting the conditions, but the proposal is being "seriously considered" by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli army has designated a humanitarian zone in the southern Gaza Strip and urged residents to move there. Meanwhile, the Israeli military continues air strikes on the densely populated city of Gaza, including a high-rise building reportedly used for information gathering and observation posts by Hamas terrorists.
US President Trump has repeatedly called for the immediate release of hostages and expressed confidence that all hostages will be freed. Trump has given an ultimatum to Hamas in March to hand over all Israeli hostages and abducted bodies.
Netanyahu's right-wing coalition partners are against a ceasefire, which could affect his political survival. However, the continuation of the conflict poses a significant risk to the lives of the hostages and the civilian population in Gaza.
The negotiations for a peaceful resolution to this conflict are of paramount importance, and all parties involved must prioritise the safety and wellbeing of the hostages and the people of Gaza.
