Halton School Board Chair demands stronger ties with Ontario's education leaders
The Chair of the Halton District School Board, Amy Collard, has called for greater collaboration between the Ministry of Education and local trustees. In a letter sent on September 24, 2025, she urged provincial leaders to work together on addressing long-standing challenges in public education. Collard, who also serves as Trustee for Burlington Ward 5, highlighted the need for joint solutions to systemic issues affecting schools. Trustees have played a key role in Ontario's education system since 1816, making theirs the longest-serving democratically elected position in Canada. Their responsibilities include overseeing local school boards, supporting the Ministry in implementing provincial curricula, and acting as a bridge between families, students, and the education system. Often, they serve as the first point of contact for parents raising concerns or students seeking special education support.
Elections for the Halton District School Board took place on February 19, 2025, with over 20 candidates running from Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills. Two Student Trustees, Melody Liu and Jay Xu, were appointed for the 2026-2027 term. A Student Trustee described the role as ensuring accountability, transparency, and a platform for student voices in decision-making. Collard's letter was addressed to Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Education Paul Calandra, local MPPs, and education stakeholders, including the Ontario Public School Boards' Association and provincial union leaders. The request emphasised the importance of public consultation before any changes to the Education Act that could alter the role of trustees.
The letter marks a formal push for dialogue between trustees and provincial authorities. It underscores the need for transparency and shared decision-making in shaping education policies. The outcome of this call for collaboration remains to be seen as discussions unfold.
