Halle's southern districts bloom after €41M in urban renewal investments

Halle (Saale) has invested heavily in its southern districts over the past two decades. Lord Mayor Dr. Alexander Vogt dismissed claims of neglect, pointing to targeted policies and substantial urban development funding. Recent projects have transformed neighbourhoods, transport links, and public spaces across Silberhöhe and Südstadt.

In Silberhöhe, a wide-ranging development plan has reshaped the area. Key projects include the redesign of Karlsruher Allee, the transformation of Gustav-Staude-Straße, and upgrades to the Grüne Mitte area. The Hohen Ufer green space has also been revitalised, while urban redevelopment efforts now extend toward Waldstadt. Nearly every playground in the district has been rebuilt or fully renovated since 2017.

Local institutions have received significant support. The neighborhood pub Silva underwent renovation, while daycare centres, schools, and sports facilities were modernised. Funding also backed initiatives for the Kinderschutzbund, ensuring improved community resources. Südstadt has seen major changes in housing and transport. The Kirschgarten residential quarter replaced an 11-story prefabricated block with six five-story buildings, adding nearly 100 new apartments. Meanwhile, the city's light rail expansion in Südstadt has already cost €80.1 million, with another €110.7 million allocated for future projects. Since 2000, the southern districts have received around €41.3 million in urban development funds. These investments covered pathways, roads, underpasses, and social infrastructure, including daycare centres, schools, and sports facilities. Additional projects, such as the renovation of Guldenstraße and a new pedestrian and cycle path at Hohen Ufer, were scheduled for completion by 2026.

The city's efforts have brought new housing, improved transport, and upgraded public spaces to Halle's southern districts. With ongoing projects and further funding planned, the area continues to see long-term investment. Officials maintain that these developments address past concerns and support future growth.
