Halle Honors Olympic Bobsled Stars Margis and Schüller in Star-Studded Ceremony
Halle celebrated two of its most successful bobsledders in a special ceremony at the city's planetarium. Thorsten Margis and Alexander Schüller were honoured for their Olympic achievements, with symbolic checks presented by Jürgen Fox, CEO of Saalesparkasse. The event highlighted their record-breaking careers and the importance of local support for elite athletes.
Thorsten Margis made history at the Winter Olympics by becoming the most decorated bobsledder ever. As part of Johannes Lochner's four-man team, he secured gold, surpassing Halle's previous record-holder, swimmer Kornelia Ender, who had won four golds. Margis has competed in five Olympic Games, starting in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018.
Alexander Schüller also shone at the Games, earning two silver medals—one in the two-man bobsled and another in the four-man event with pilot Francesco Friedrich. Together, the pair have collected 48 medals across Olympic, World, European, and German Championship competitions. The celebration took place at Halle's planetarium, chosen for its unique atmosphere. Lord Mayor Alexander Vogt displayed the gold medal won by Margis and Schüller during the event. Ingo Michalak, managing director of SV Halle, stressed the role of strong sports infrastructure in nurturing top athletes. Jürgen Fox handed over checks of €7,500 to Margis and €10,000 to Schüller. He also spoke about the financial challenges facing elite sports in Germany, calling for more private and regional sponsorship to help athletes focus on training and competition.
The ceremony recognised Margis and Schüller's contributions to bobsledding and their impact on Halle's sporting legacy. Their combined success, along with the financial support from Saalesparkasse, underscores the city's commitment to elite athletes. The event also highlighted ongoing efforts to secure funding for future generations of competitors.
