Hailakandi marks 25 years of PMGSY's rural road revolution

A special event in Hailakandi recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The programme brought together senior officials, contractors, and local residents involved in its rollout. Ajit Das, Superintending Engineer of the Cachar Division, attended as the chief guest.

PMGSY was launched to boost rural connectivity and improve living standards in villages. Over the years, it has helped link remote areas to essential services like markets, schools, and healthcare. The scheme has also narrowed the gap between rural and urban development by integrating isolated communities.

In Hailakandi district, the programme has already built 387 km of roads in Phase I, followed by 17 km in Phase II and 95 km in Phase III. Under the current Phase-IV, another 202 km of rural roads are planned for construction. The initiative is widely regarded as one of India's most successful government schemes. Its focus on accessibility has brought tangible benefits to rural populations across the country.

The anniversary event highlighted the ongoing impact of PMGSY in Hailakandi and beyond. With further road projects in progress, the scheme continues to strengthen rural infrastructure. This expansion aims to support long-term development in underserved regions.
