"Habeck advised: Divine Intervention - key point, distance"
In a surprising turn of events, Robert Habeck, former Vice-Chancellor and Economics Minister, announced his withdrawal from the Bundestag on Monday. This decision has ignited a wave of discussions in the political sphere, particularly concerning his intense rivalry with current Bavarian Minister-President and CSU-Vorsitzender, Markus Söder.
Söder, known for his contentious stance in public debates, particularly on matters such as reforms for the Bürgergeld and his austere budget plans, responded to Habeck's departure with a light-hearted jest, saying, "Go with God - just not too close."
The rivalry between Habeck and Söder has been a prominent feature in recent years, marked by mutual accusations and attacks. During last year's election campaign, Habeck was a frequent target of criticism from the CSU. In his announcement, Habeck took a swipe at Söder, referring to the CSU leader's "obsession with sausage-eating" as not politics.
Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, who did not directly address Habeck's attacks, has also been a subject of criticism from Habeck. He accused Klöckner of always polarizing, polemicizing, and dividing. In a taz interview, Habeck heavily criticized Klöckner's leadership style.
Klöckner's spokesperson, however, maintained that mandate surrenders by members of parliament are a common parliamentary procedure that the Bundestag President does not comment on. Söder, in an interview with Bild, wished Habeck "good luck outside of politics."
As Habeck steps away from the political arena, the future of German politics remains uncertain. However, one thing is clear: the departure of a prominent figure like Habeck is bound to shake up the political landscape. Whether this will lead to a more harmonious or contentious political environment remains to be seen.
