Guide to Landing a Teaching Position for Your Native Language in Sweden

Unlike regular teachers, native language teachers are not required to have a teaching certificate (legitimation). Instead, the criteria include having at least five pupils who wish to learn the same language, a suitable teacher, students having a guardian whose native language is not Swedish, and students having basic knowledge of the language and using it daily at home.
Every child in Sweden, whose native language is not Swedish, has the right to study their mother tongue as a subject at school. This policy, introduced in the 1960s in response to increased labor migration, aims to help these students improve their mastery of their native language and build a strong foundation for their future development.
Studying one's native language is optional but can earn extra credits. Every municipality is required by law to offer native language instruction in whatever language parents and pupils request, provided certain criteria are met.
