Guide for Beer Enthusiasts: Exploring Big Bend National Park's Best Ale Spots

Big Bend National Park, nestled at the southern tip of Texas, is a desert refuge for a diverse array of wildlife, including peccaries, great horned owls, spiny lizards, and many more. This expansive park offers a myriad of opportunities for exploration, from paddling the Rio Grande, hiking mountain trails, birdwatching, and camping, to soaking in the natural hot springs at Boquillas.

One of the park's most striking features is Santa Elena Canyon, the westernmost river canyon. A 20-mile float from Lajitas to the Santa Elena River Access Point reveals the canyon's majesty. However, it's essential to check the river levels, as the Rock Slide rapid becomes a Class IV obstacle at certain flows.

For those seeking a challenge, the Talley Trailhead serves as the starting point for a demanding hike to Mariscal Mountain's tabletop. Spanning approximately 6.6 miles, this day hike offers breathtaking views into Mariscal Canyon, where the Rio Grande begins its northward swing. Another day hike, the Mariscal Canyon Rim, provides panoramic vistas of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Camping enthusiasts will find various options within the park. The Rio Grande Village Campground, located down the road from Boquillas Hot Springs, boasts more amenities. For those preferring a more primitive experience, camping on gravel bars in Santa Elena Canyon requires a permit.

Boquillas Hot Springs is a location within the park where soaking is possible. However, it's important to note that alcohol is not allowed at the hot springs. Permits for nearby primitive drive-in campsites like La Clocha or Gravel Pit (high-clearance vehicle required) are available for those seeking a more social experience, including happy hour.

In a unique partnership, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has created a special collection of its Pale Ale dedicated to four national parks, including Big Bend. The limited-edition packaging of this beer highlights iconic images of Big Bend National Park. Moreover, the company is donating to the National Park Foundation to support wildlife and habitat conservation in the park.

As always, it's recommended to check the park website for conditions and safety information, as well as where alcohol consumption is permitted, to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to Big Bend National Park.
