Guernsey's new family cycling scheme builds road confidence together

A new pilot scheme is launching in Guernsey to help families cycle together safely on the roads. The Bikeability Family Programme, run by Traffic & Highway Services and the Health Improvement Commission, aims to boost confidence for both parents and children. Training will take place in two parts, starting in a traffic-free area before moving onto real roads. The first group session will be held at Les Beaucamps High on 12 and 26 April, running from 14:30 to 16:00. A second session is scheduled at St Sampson's High on 18 April and 2 May, between 12:00 and 13:30. Each session combines off-road practice with on-road experience.

Adults will learn how to guide their children safely, using 'shepherding' techniques. Meanwhile, children will improve bike control and communication through structured games. To join, parents must already be comfortable cycling on roads, and children should be confident riding in a playground. All participants must bring their own roadworthy bike and helmet. Spaces are limited, so families need to complete an online form to secure a place or join the waiting list. The programme is open to islanders of all ages, not just schoolchildren, making cycling more accessible across the community.

The scheme focuses on building skills for safer family cycling. By offering structured training, organisers hope to encourage more people to take up cycling on Guernsey's roads. Interested families can sign up now to reserve their spot.
