Grass-Covered Alleyway in Berlin Hides a Pillow (Berliner Kissen)
In a bid to combat excessive speeds and reduce noise pollution, the City Traffic Department has installed mobile road humps on Grass Street, the city centre's bustling heart. The public works department carried out the installation on Thursday.
These 1.80-meter-wide humps, standing at 6.5 centimeters high, are passable for bicycles, buses, and vehicles with a wide wheelbase. They make continuous acceleration impossible, aiming to encourage slower driving.
The trial operation of these speed-reducing humps will run until winter, after which their effectiveness and transferability will be evaluated. The evaluation process will include testing their applicability to other locations within the city.
The decision to install the humps on Grass Street was a collaborative one, with input from the public works department, traffic department, police, and utility company. A test site for mobile road humps was determined to be Grass Street, making it the first location in the city to trial this measure.
The purpose of the humps is twofold: to reduce noise pollution and to counteract excessive speeds. The city centre is undergoing more frequent speed measurements by the traffic enforcement during the trial operation, with the aim of monitoring the impact of the humps on traffic flow and speed.
The police were also involved in a meeting with top management regarding the trial operation, ensuring a coordinated approach to traffic management and enforcement.
The evaluation and test for transferability of the road hump measure will occur post-winter, after the trial operation on Grass Street has concluded. The city centre will continue to be the location for more frequent speed measurements by the traffic enforcement during this period.
The trial phase for the road humps on Grass Street will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness and transferability of this measure, potentially paving the way for their implementation in other areas of the city. The city is committed to creating a safer, quieter, and more sustainable urban environment, and the trial of these road humps is a step towards achieving this goal.
