The KfW Residential Building Subsidy 461 was a state-funded program aimed at promoting the construction and renovation of energy-efficient properties. The program catered to various types of residential properties. For a single-family, semi-detached, terraced house, or a half of a semi-detached house, an extra grant for construction accompaniment of up to €5,000 was available. The subsidy amount depended on the actual costs incurred and the degree of energy efficiency achieved in the building. If the building did not meet the energy standard, the subsidy was reduced. The grants for Efficiency House Denkmal (Heritage), Efficiency House 100, and for the complete renovation of an existing building to Efficiency House Efficiency Class 40 PLUS offered up to €30,000, €33,000, and €75,000 per residential unit, respectively.

For those who didn't require a grant, KfW offered low-interest loans with an effective interest rate of 0.57% or lower. Additionally, a repayment subsidy of up to 50% was available for KfW loans.

The program was not limited to individual homeowners. It was open to housing cooperatives, housing associations, non-profit organisations, and companies. The application for the KfW grant 461 was also possible for smelting works and industrial companies, allowing up to 50% of eligible costs with a maximum of €75,000.

The subsidy was paid directly to the applicant and did not need to be repaid. The program, however, came to an end in July 2022 as part of the reform of funding measures.
