Granted Digital Nomad Visa, Can One Achieve Permanent Residence in Portugal?
The Portugal digital nomad visa, officially known as the D8 visa, has gained popularity among remote workers looking to relocate to Europe. This visa, launched in late 2022, offers a beneficial opportunity for digital nomads to live and work in Portugal.
To be eligible, non-EU citizens must be employed or self-employed by a company outside Portugal, demonstrate remote work capability, have a minimum monthly income of around €3,000, provide proof of accommodation, and submit a relatively straightforward application. The visa is available in two validity options: a 12-month non-renewable visa and a two-year renewable residence permit.
If you opt for the two-year residence permit, your initial visa will be valid for just four months. After arriving in Portugal, you will apply for your two-year residence permit, which is renewable for up to five years. This path leads to permanent residency in Portugal.
To maintain your temporary residency status, you must stay in Portugal for at least 16 months during the first two years of residency, and for at least 28 months during the three years of validity when you renew your residence permit. For permanent residency, you must live in Portugal full-time for five years and meet additional eligibility requirements.
Permanent residency in Portugal means that you can live and work in Portugal indefinitely and take advantage of social services such as the national healthcare and social security system. You will still have to renew your permanent residence card every five years to remain a resident in Portugal.
Becoming a Portuguese citizen allows you to have full access to the European Union and to vote in Portuguese elections. Portugal allows you to have dual citizenship, meaning you can keep your original nationality and hold multiple passports. To apply for citizenship through naturalization, you must have lived legally in Portugal for five years, even with a temporary residence permit. The processing time after submitting your documents takes about a year.
Navigating the application process can be complex, but services like Nomads Embassy can help. They offer a free digital nomad visa eligibility assessment and assistance throughout the application process.
The Portugal digital nomad visa is a popular and beneficial option for remote workers who wish to relocate to Europe. With its attractive benefits and straightforward application process, it's no wonder this visa is gaining traction among digital nomads worldwide.
