Graduate Degrees Surge, but Completion Rates and Debt Raise Concerns
More Americans than ever are earning graduate degrees, yet many face heavy debt and uncertain outcomes. Over the past 20 years, the share of U.S. adults with advanced qualifications has nearly doubled. Despite this growth, key details—like how often students actually finish their programs—remain unclear due to a lack of national tracking.
Unlike undergraduate studies, graduate program completion rates are not systematically recorded across the country. Available data shows wide differences by field: law students graduate most often (81 percent), while education programs see the lowest success (53 percent). In Texas, where some records exist, only 62 percent of graduate students who started between 2003 and 2013 earned a degree within six years. However, rates improved over time, rising from 58 percent in 2003-04 to 68 percent by 2012-13, with flagship public universities averaging 72 percent.
Graduate borrowers now hold nearly half of all outstanding student loan debt. Those who complete their degrees typically owe more than those who drop out. Meanwhile, undergraduate completion rates have stayed steady, with around 64 percent of bachelor's students finishing within six years since 2016. Master's programs, though shorter and more selective, still see attrition due to costs and work demands. Experts suggest that requiring graduate programs to publish completion and debt figures could push institutions to improve support. It might also help students make more informed choices before enrolling.
The gap in national data leaves critical questions unanswered about graduate education's real costs and benefits. With nearly half of student debt tied to advanced degrees, clearer reporting could shape policies and student decisions. For now, outcomes vary sharply by field, location, and institution—leaving many graduates with heavy loans but no diploma.
