Government Official Proposes to Abolish "All-Male Management Areas"
German Family Minister Pushes for Gender Parity in Leadership Positions
Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey has called for a change in the current leadership landscape, advocating for more women in executive roles. In a series of statements, Giffey has highlighted the need for fixed target sizes, sanctions, and clear guidelines to achieve gender parity.
Giffey has expressed her hope that the new Leadership Positions Act (FuPoG II) will be agreed upon within the coalition by September. She believes that the law, which should be presented to the cabinet by the end of December at the latest, will provide the necessary framework for achieving this goal.
The Minister has indicated that the aim is not to dismiss boards currently managing a crisis, but rather that they consider a woman for the next vacancy. She believes this push for gender parity is not revolutionary, but rather overdue.
Angela Merkel, the influential leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has also spoken out in favour of more women in leadership positions. Merkel has used her influence within her party to promote the FuPoG II law and has supported measures such as public statements advocating for gender equality, backing party initiatives to increase women's representation in leadership, and encouraging legislative efforts for greater female participation in executive roles.
Giffey has stated that "nothing would change on its own" and that "It would be nice" is no longer enough. She told T-Online that "we're not getting anywhere with non-binding recommendations" and called for more pressure on companies. Without fixed target sizes, sanctions, and clear guidelines, Giffey believes it won't work to achieve parity.
Giffey has also emphasized the need for boards with more than four members to include at least one woman in the future. She believes that this is essential for achieving a balanced leadership landscape in Germany.
In conclusion, Giffey's push for gender parity in leadership positions is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society. With the support of Merkel and the coalition, it is hoped that the new Leadership Positions Act (FuPoG II) will be passed during this legislative period, paving the way for a more diverse and representative leadership in Germany.
