Government Departments Voice Concerns Over Wellbeing of Homeless Individuals in DC During Encampment Clearing Efforts
In the heart of Washington D.C., the Georgetown neighbourhood has been experiencing a shift due to the recent clearance of homeless encampments. The federal government's persistent threat to remove these settlements has made it unlikely for homeless individuals to return to the same areas.
The Georgetown Ministry Center, a non-profit organisation established in 1984, plays a significant role in guiding chronically homeless individuals towards stability. Executive Director Claire Wilson stated that the centre serves some of the most vulnerable members of the community, including a substantial number of guests over 55, women, and veterans.
David McCorvey, director of communications at SOME, another active charity in the area, reported an uptick in people seeking breakfast at their nonsectarian organization. However, representatives from both charities have not seen a major impact on their operations or in the numbers who seek basic services.
The clearance of encampments has forced some displaced homeless individuals to seek temporary shelter if capacity allows. Unfortunately, many continue to sleep outdoors in more isolated areas, where they face greater risks to their safety and are harder to connect with stabilizing resources.
The Community Partnership, an organisation working to combat homelessness in D.C., has observed an increase in the number of homeless people. According to their data, there are approximately 3,782 nightly homeless individuals, with around 800 sleeping on the streets.
The number of unhoused people represents a 19% decrease from 2020 and is 9% fewer than last year. This decrease might suggest that some homeless individuals have found temporary accommodation or have moved to other locations.
The clearance of encampments has also had an impact on other charities. Dennis Dee, executive director of the Father McKenna Center, stated that they have seen a few more men from shelters run by Catholic Charities. The Father McKenna Center, which follows the Ignatian Catholic tradition, provides meals, showers, and a place to do laundry, among its services.
However, it's important to note that the uptick in individuals seeking services at the Father McKenna Center may not be directly attributable to the encampment clearances. McCorvey also mentioned that they cannot definitively attribute the uptick to the encampments being torn down.
Betty Gentle, SOME's director of advocacy and public policy, stated that many displaced homeless individuals are likely to eventually leave the district. This could mean that the homeless population in Georgetown might decrease further in the coming months.
Despite the clearance of encampments, without affordable housing options, people may become less visible to the public and even to their support systems, but they will still be experiencing homelessness. It is hoped that the placement process can be accelerated for those who already have housing vouchers.
Organisations like 211 Maryland offer services for veterans, including self-help groups, family support, counseling, housing, and mental health services, which are relevant for homeless veterans or at-risk populations. These services could play a crucial role in helping displaced homeless individuals rebuild their lives.
In conclusion, while the clearance of encampments has caused a shift in the homeless population in Georgetown, the fight against homelessness continues. Organisations like the Georgetown Ministry Center, SOME, the Father McKenna Center, and the Community Partnership, along with services provided by 211 Maryland, are working tirelessly to guide homeless individuals towards stability, health, and housing.
