In an effort to ensure that schools remain a safe and open space for discussion, representatives from various sectors will gather on Thursday for a crucial meeting. The discussion, which includes politicians, scientists, foundations, and migrant organizations, is aimed at exploring support options for teachers in combating extremism.

The State Minister has emphasized the importance of schools as a place where these topics can be discussed openly and respectfully. This sentiment is shared by the EU ministers, who stand united against any form of religious extremism.

Recent reports suggest that there are increasing attempts from outside to prevent the discussion of certain topics in the classroom due to differing worldviews or religious beliefs. Education Minister Anja Karliczek has pointed out these concerns, and the discussion on Thursday is part of the ongoing efforts to address this issue.

Germany's Commissioner for Integration, Annette Widmann-Mauz, and Education Minister Anja Karliczek (both CDU) are spearheading this initiative. They believe that teachers play an invaluable role in promoting the values of German society and want to offer them more support in combating extremism in schools.

One of the support offers suggested is the deployment of specialists at schools who can provide further assistance with problems related to extremism. The experts involved in the Thursday discussion, such as Niko Lamprecht, Chairman of the Verband der Geschichtslehrer Deutschlands (VGD), and other representatives from organizations like the VHD, are focused on strengthening teachers’ ability to respond to populist and right-wing extremist remarks.

The discussion will also cover targeted teacher training, sensitization programs, and clear backing for teachers confronting extremist tendencies in schools. The politicians have emphasized the need to stand up for teachers, especially when they are put under pressure in the context of discussing sensitive topics.

The EU education ministers agreed on Monday to further promote the dissemination of the EU's value foundation in schools, marking a new development in the discussion. The meeting on Thursday is an extension of the politicians' call for "concrete support offers for teachers" when they are put under pressure, as previously stated by Commissioner for Integration, Annette Widmann-Mauz.

The discussion is a significant step towards ensuring that schools remain a protected space where these topics can be discussed openly and respectfully, as previously emphasized by the State Minister.
