Görlitz entrepreneur's legal actions come to a halt.

A fatal boating accident on the Neisse led to multi-entrepreneur Stefan Menzel (34) from Görlitz being charged with involuntary manslaughter by the public prosecutor's office. However, the charges have been dropped in favor of a fine. Menzel must now pay 10,000 euros to the victim's family.

In August 2021, a 62-year-old family man rented a boat from "Boats & Friends" along with three of his colleagues for a trip on the Neisse river. The men were inexperienced in handling inflatable boats, and were given life jackets and instructions to sail directly over the weirs. However, there were no warnings about the high water level or the associated risks, nor were they advised to start their tour below the weir. Tragically, while crossing the weir, the older man got pulled out of the boat and drowned.

Jürgen Schmidt, a senior public prosecutor, stated that there were no such warnings given to the boat crew. Nonetheless, after the charges surfaced, Stefan Menzel, the entrepreneur who owns the booth rental company in Görlitz, spoke out about the incident.

Robert Zukowski, a lawyer representing the family of the victim, mentioned that to minimize the emotional burden on the widow and son, they opted to drop the case. Furthermore, since it would have been hard to pinpoint specific responsibility for the unfortunate incident, it was unlikely that a prison sentence would be handed down.
