Global Landscapes Undergo Ecosystem Restoration through Gender-Specific Methods, July 8th, 2025

The world is witnessing a significant shift in the approach to biodiversity conservation, with a growing emphasis on gender-responsive restoration practices. This transformation is spearheaded by the Building Resilience and Weaving Gender-Responsive Approaches to Biodiversity Governance initiative, launched in 2021, and the Restore HER Rights initiative, launched by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) in the same year.

The Restore HER Rights initiative, a collaborative space for learning and advocacy, seeks to amplify women's vital contributions to ecosystem restoration. A global summary report has been released, highlighting the impact of women-led restoration initiatives across the globe. These case studies demonstrate how human rights-based, gender-equitable practices build stronger communities, healthier ecosystems, and impactful biodiversity outcomes.

One of the documented case studies is the work of the Women Research Group in Myanmar, where women are leading the charge in restoring mangrove forests. In Kenya and the Solomon Islands, women are spearheading forest restoration efforts. Similarly, in Costa Rica, women are making a difference through mangrove restoration. Coastal wetland restoration in Cameroon and dune restoration in Argentine Patagonia, Argentina, are other notable examples.

These initiatives are not just about restoring ecosystems; they are about empowering women and promoting self-determination. The global summary report documents advancement in this area, showcasing progress towards food sovereignty through women-led restoration initiatives. Enhanced leadership in decision-making due to these initiatives is another key finding. Improved community health is another positive outcome, as demonstrated by these case studies.

The Restore HER Rights initiative aims to empower community-led restoration projects and amplify women's voices in the realm of biodiversity conservation. If you are interested in participating, sign up at [email protected] for more information.

The Building Resilience and Weaving Gender-Responsive Approaches to Biodiversity Governance initiative, with its goal of embedding gender-responsive restoration practices into national and international biodiversity goals, is a testament to the growing recognition of the crucial role women play in ecosystem restoration.

The October 2025 issue of Policy Matters will feature more information on the Restore HER Rights initiative. Until then, these inspiring case studies serve as a reminder of the power of women-led restoration initiatives and the positive impact they can have on our planet.
