Global Crime Investigative Agency's Prohibited Soccer Gambling Ring Results in over 5,100 Arrests and Recovery of $59 Million in Assets
Global Crackdown on Illegal Soccer Betting and Human Trafficking: SOGA X Operation Yields Stunning Results
In a coordinated global effort, law enforcement authorities from 28 nations and territories, led by INTERPOL, dismantled a major gambling operation in Vietnam during the SOGA X operation. The operation, which took place in June and July, targeted illegal online betting on the UEFA 2024 tournament and resulted in the closure of thousands of illegal online platforms.
The operation, which used an intricate network of e-wallets and bank accounts for payments, was a significant success due to the crucial efforts of law enforcement authorities on the ground and the global information sharing that facilitated its execution.
According to INTERPOL, the gambling operation in Vietnam was handling an estimated $800,000 per day. Raids on two locations in Thailand led to the seizure of assets worth more than $9m. In addition, major money laundering operations were uncovered during the operation, with a total of $59m being seized.
However, the operation also uncovered a disturbing case of human trafficking in the Philippines. Over 650 victims were forced to work against their will in a scam centre that focused on illegal gambling. The victims were promised employment, only to find themselves trapped in a cycle of exploitation and abuse.
Thankfully, hundreds of human trafficking victims were rescued during the operation, and the biggest case of human trafficking was in the Philippines. The success of the operation was attributed to the global cooperation and information sharing that enabled the authorities to identify and disrupt the criminal networks involved.
Overall, the SOGA X operation was a significant achievement in the fight against illegal soccer betting and human trafficking. A total of 95 police authorities participated in the operation, which resulted in over 5,100 arrests. The operation serves as a reminder of the importance of global cooperation in combating transnational organised crime.
