Gliding on Frozen Canals of Augsburg
The city of Augsburg is gearing up for the start of the ice skating season, with the Haunstetten Ice Rink set to open its doors on September 16, 2025. Here's a breakdown of the key information you need to know about public ice skating in Augsburg.
From September 16, skaters can enjoy the ice at the Haunstetten Ice Rink. Another rink, Rink 2 of the Curt-Frenzel Stadium, will follow suit on November 1, 2025, weather permitting.
The number of participants is limited to around 220 people at the Haunstetten Ice Rink. If you fall under certain categories such as children under 18, holders of honorary cards, severely disabled persons, students, volunteers, retirees receiving basic security in old age, and recipients of ongoing HLU, you'll be eligible for discounted rates.
The "Regulation of the City of Augsburg on Entering and Using Ice Surfaces (Ice Surface Regulation - EisVO)" (3140) governs these rules. It's important to note that this regulation applies throughout the city of Augsburg for all public and private waters, with exceptions for private waters located on non-publicly accessible properties.
For those who don't have their own skates, the Augsburg Panther Eishockey GmbH offers a skate rental service. Sizes range from 25 to 48, and 4-blade gliders for attachment to brought shoes are available, although availability is subject to confirmation. A pair of skates costs 4.50 Euro, and ice aid costs 3.50 Euro. Skates can be rented on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and during school holidays.
Skate rental prices vary based on the size of the skate, not the age of the renter. For sizes 26 - 35, the price is 3 €, and for sizes 36 - 47, the price is 5 €.
It's worth noting that since October 1, 2024, it has been prohibited to enter and use ice surfaces on waters within the city limits of Augsburg. However, the city administration has the right to approve the use of ice surfaces outside the regular period within the city limits, provided a hydrologist commissioned by the property owner has classified the ice surface as safe.
For a smoother experience, those who buy their entrance ticket a few days in advance or purchase a 10-ticket card won't have to queue at the cash machine. The cash machines in the ice sports facilities accept both cash and card payments.
The Ordnance Office can grant permission to enter ice surfaces on private property, and for this, a hydrologist commissioned by the property owner must classify the entry onto the ice surface as safe.
Artificial ice rinks and ice halls are not subject to this regulation.
