"Giovanni Boccaccio's 'Decamerone' cumbersome with passion and intrigue, showcases a performance by Alice Eßer and Les Bouffons"
On September 7th at 5 PM, the Bürgerhalle in Langenfeld-Wiescheid will host a captivating performance by the renowned Renaissance ensemble "Les Bouffons". This event is part of the Wiescheid Meeting and promises to be a time journey to Florence in the 14th century.
The performance will feature four stories from Giovanni Boccaccio's "Decameron", a collection of tales told by ten wealthy young people who fled from Florence to a Tuscan estate to escape the devastating effects of the Black Death. The plague, originating from Asia, had broken out over Europe in 1348, affecting Italy, including Florence, where a quarter of the population was wiped out.
During the performance, Alice Eßer, a Cologne actress and cabaret artist, will recite and sing these stories, accompanied by music from the time when "Decameron" became a worldwide bestseller due to the newly invented printing press. The ensemble will play on historical instruments such as recorders, gemshorns, and trumpets, under the direction of Nelly Niklas.
"Les Bouffons" is affiliated with the Langenfeld Music School, and the performance's director, Anna Müller, is the head of the ensemble at the school. The programme will include compositions by Orlando di Lasso, Jacob Obrecht, Josquin Desprez, Ludwig Senfl, Giovanni Gastoldi, and others.
Admission to the performance is free, and donations to cover costs are appreciated. So, come join us on September 7th at Bürgerhalle in Langenfeld-Wiescheid, for an unforgettable evening of music, dance, and storytelling that transports us back to the heart of the Renaissance.
