In a sombre turn of events, Dalmas Otieno, the esteemed former Cabinet minister and Rongo MP, passed away on Sunday. Otieno, who served in various ministerial positions throughout his political career, was known for his unwavering dedication, exemplary leadership, and independent mind.

Born and raised in Kenya, Otieno pursued his studies in Applied Economics at Makerere University. After completing his education, he ventured into journalism before joining the public service sector, where his expertise in finance and economics proved invaluable.

Otieno's political career began in 1988 when he was elected MP for Rongo. During his time with the Kanu party, he devoted himself wholeheartedly, serving with unmatched excellence. His exceptional leadership skills were evident as he rose through various roles, holding positions such as Minister for Industrialisation (1988-1991), Minister of Transport (1991-1996), Minister of Labour and Human Resource Development (1991), and Minister of State for Public Service under former President Mwai Kibaki.

Gideon Moi, the chairman of Kanu, described Otieno as a visionary and dependable leader. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen hailed Otieno as a great leader and distinguished technocrat, praising his measured approach to issues and integrity. Treasury CS John Mbadi remembered Otieno as a man of wisdom.

Beyond politics, Otieno had an illustrious career in finance and economics. His contributions to these fields were significant, and he will be remembered for his tireless efforts and commitment to his work.

Several political leaders have paid tribute to Otieno since his passing, expressing their condolences and sharing memories of the esteemed politician. His legacy will undoubtedly live on, inspiring future generations of leaders in Kenya.

Otieno reclaimed his seat as Rongo MP in 2007 and again in 2013. His passing is a great loss to the Kenyan political landscape, and he will be deeply missed by many. Rest in peace, Hon. Dalmas Otieno.
