Germany's democracy programme faces €200m cuts amid fierce political backlash
Federal Family Minister Karin Prien has announced major changes to the Demokratie leben! (Democracy in Action!) programme. The overhaul will cut funding for over 200 projects by the end of 2026, sparking criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups. Prien claims the restructuring will improve efficiency and focus resources on grassroots organisations.
The reforms, unveiled in summer 2025, aim to redirect funds towards schools, sports clubs, and digital prevention initiatives. Prien argues the changes will address societal challenges more effectively while tightening oversight—grantees must now report directly to the Family Ministry. However, the shift comes with a €200 million budget constraint, forcing cuts to long-standing projects.
Among the affected organisations, the Amadeu Antonio Foundation faces losing up to €850,000 in annual support. Other examples named in reports include HateAid, Correctiv, the Adenauer Foundation, and the Alliance of Islamic Communities in Northern Germany. While no full list has been published, the cuts have drawn sharp backlash. Heidi Reichinnek of the Left Party accused Prien of abandoning democracy and human rights advocates, demanding reliable long-term funding instead. Jasmina Hostert (SPD) stressed the programme's importance in strengthening civil society, while Misbah Khan (Greens) criticised the minister for *taking an axe* to organised groups. Opposition leaders warn the move could weaken efforts against extremism and social division.
The reforms will take effect next year, with funding for the 200-plus projects phased out by 2026. Prien's plan prioritises local institutions and stricter accountability, but critics argue the cuts risk undermining years of civil society work. The debate now shifts to how the remaining budget will be allocated—and which groups will lose support.
