Germany’s Defense Crisis Deepens as Russia Threat Looms Over Europe
North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul has warned that Europe, Germany, and Westphalia face growing threats from Russia. Speaking at an event on civil and military defense, he stressed the urgent need to strengthen both areas. Authorities also highlighted that most residents remain unprepared for emergencies, with only one in four stockpiling essential supplies.
At the event 'Civil and Military Defense – Is Westphalia Prepared?', Reul called for a wake-up in defense efforts. He argued that Germany must expand its military to deter Russian aggression. The Bundeswehr currently has around 180,000 soldiers but needs 260,000 to ensure NATO’s security and make any attack unthinkable.
The German Red Cross added to the warnings by demanding more government funding for civil defense. Much of its equipment is currently paid for through donations and membership fees. Meanwhile, officials urge citizens to prepare for crises by storing at least 14 days’ worth of food, water, and other supplies. Reul’s remarks come as concerns grow over Russia’s intentions. The minister emphasized that civil and military defense must work together to protect public supply chains and national security.
The warnings highlight two key challenges: a shortfall of 80,000 soldiers in the Bundeswehr and weak public preparedness. Without more funding and recruitment, Germany risks falling short in both military deterrence and civil emergency response. Authorities continue to push for stronger defenses and greater citizen readiness.
