Germany's Curbside EV Charging Gets a Boost with Ladebordstein Partnership
A new partnership aims to bring electric vehicle charging to more streets across Germany. Rheinmetall AG and TankE GmbH have joined forces to expand the rollout of curbside charging units. The system, called Ladebordstein, offers a practical solution for cities where space is limited or traditional stations are difficult to install.
The Ladebordstein unit allows drivers to charge directly at the kerb, saving space and reducing costs. Unlike conventional stations, it requires less infrastructure and puts less strain on the electrical grid. Its compact design also makes it suitable for rural areas, business locations, and heritage-protected sites where larger installations are not feasible.
Rheinmetall AG brings expertise in hardware manufacturing, while TankE GmbH manages planning, installation, and ongoing maintenance. The partnership follows successful pilot projects, though exact details on their scale remain undisclosed. Users have already highlighted the system's ease of use, lower risk of vandalism, and space-efficient layout. The charging unit supports up to 22 kW and is designed for both public and commercial use. For mass production, the companies plan further improvements, including better markings and integration with navigation and charging apps. These updates aim to make the system even more user-friendly and accessible.
The collaboration between Rheinmetall and TankE will now focus on scaling up production. The Ladebordstein units are expected to provide a cost-effective and adaptable charging option for urban and rural areas alike. With lower installation costs and greater flexibility, the system could help expand Germany's EV infrastructure more efficiently.
