Germany’s Chemical Industry Hits 30-Year Low Amid Deepening Crisis

Germany’s chemical industry is facing its worst downturn in decades. Order books have collapsed to levels not seen since the early 1990s, with companies slashing jobs and investment. Experts warn that a mix of high costs, weak demand, and shrinking competitiveness is pushing the sector deeper into crisis.

The latest figures reveal a steep decline in the industry’s health. The Ifo Institute’s barometer for the chemical sector dropped to –19.4 points in October, down from –12.0 in September. Even more alarming, the assessment of order books plummeted to –68.9 points—the lowest reading in over 30 years.

The chemical industry now faces a prolonged period of low activity. With order backlogs at historic lows and companies forced to make deep cuts, recovery appears distant. The sector’s challenges—high costs, weak demand, and regulatory hurdles—show no signs of easing soon.
