Germany’s AI Tool *JANO* Speeds Up Court Decision Anonymisation

Baden-Württemberg and Hesse have launched a joint project to accelerate the anonymisation of court decisions using artificial intelligence. The tool, named JANO, automatically identifies personal data in judgments and suggests redactions before publication. Both states view this as a significant step in modernising the justice system with digital support tools.

The JANO project emerged from the second wave of digitalisation efforts in Germany’s legal sector. A prototype was developed by justice employees from both states alongside an external IT firm. The system scans court rulings, flags sensitive information, and proposes anonymised versions for review.

The JANO system aims to simplify the publication of court decisions while upholding strict data protection. Approved anonymised rulings will not only enhance transparency but also aid in training next-generation AI models. The project signifies another stride towards incorporating intelligent assistance into Germany’s legal processes.
