German town cancels Jewish journalist’s event, sparking free speech uproar

A planned reading by Jewish journalist Michel Friedman in Klütz, Germany, was cancelled at the last minute, sparking widespread controversy. The event, initially invited by local organisers, was called off over alleged security fears—though critics claim political pressure played a role. Hundreds later gathered in protest, with prominent figures condemning the decision as a threat to free speech.

The Literaturhaus in Klütz had originally invited Friedman, a well-known talk show host and former CDU politician, to give a public reading. But local officials reversed the decision, citing concerns that right-wing extremists or Hamas sympathisers might disrupt the event. Mayor Jürgen Mevius initially claimed financial constraints were to blame, though the Literaturhaus director disputed this explanation.

Roughly 500 protesters assembled in Klütz to show support for Friedman after his uninvitation. The journalist himself attended the demonstration, stating he wanted to engage directly with the public and reject sweeping generalisations. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Culture Minister Bettina Martin also joined the rally, calling the cancellation a mistake that undermined democratic values. The affair drew sharp criticism from national figures. Felix Klein, Germany’s antisemitism commissioner, condemned the move as a breach of core societal principles. Meanwhile, Mayor Mevius resigned over the controversy, admitting the cancellation sent a ‘misleading signal’ about tolerance and open debate. Reports later suggested that local politicians had feared backlash from AfD-aligned groups, influencing their decision. The incident gained significant media attention, partly due to the region’s growing support for the far-right AfD party. Observers noted that the cancellation reflected broader tensions over free expression in areas where right-wing populism holds sway.

Friedman’s reading remains cancelled, but the backlash has forced a reckoning over political interference in cultural events. The resignation of Klütz’s mayor and the public protest signal deep unease about the balance between security concerns and democratic freedoms. The case now stands as a flashpoint in Germany’s ongoing debate over extremism and the limits of free speech.
