German military praises the new Wolf 2 in a video presentation.
The German Armed Forces are set to receive a new all-terrain vehicle, the "Wolf 2", which is currently undergoing testing at the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 in Trier since the end of 2024. Developed by Mercedes, the Wolf 2 is the successor to the current "Wolf" and is expected to replace it in the German Armed Forces.
The initial order for the German Armed Forces includes 1,500 vehicles of the Wolf 2. Two variants are planned: a command vehicle and a field hunter version. The new vehicle offers significant improvements over its predecessor, boasting more ground clearance and a reinforced chassis.
The Wolf 2 is being put through its paces in various tests, evaluating its behavior during helicopter transport, loading by rail, climbing and wading capabilities, and performance at temperatures ranging from -34 to +49 degrees Celsius. It is also being tested on different surfaces such as field paths, gravel, sand, and synthetic test tracks.
One of the key improvements of the Wolf 2 is its driving behavior, which has been reported to be significantly better than the Wolf 1. According to test drivers, stepping into the Wolf 2 is like stepping from a donkey cart to a spaceship.
The Wolf 2 is equipped with digital command and communication equipment (D-LBO) as standard, and it delivers 249 horsepower with 600 Nm of torque. The vehicle is certified for Euro-III and is suitable for low-quality diesel. It has a payload of 1.2 tons at a total weight of 4.5 tons.
Series production of the Wolf 2 is set to start at the end of 2025, with regular troop deliveries beginning in 2026. Up to 5,800 units of the Wolf 2 are expected to be delivered by 2032. The idea to develop the new all-terrain vehicle for the German Armed Forces was initiated by the German Ministry of Defence and associated contractors, but precise details on the original developer or designer are not specified in the available sources.
The Wolf 2 is based on the military series W 464 of the G-Class. It is being hailed as a significant upgrade for the German Armed Forces, offering better off-road capability and improved driving behavior. With its robust design and advanced features, the Wolf 2 is poised to make a significant impact in the field.
