German military, Bundeswehr, establishes a new unit within Lithuania's borders
Russia's ongoing attack on Ukraine has raised concerns among its neighbouring countries, including Lithuania. Lithuania, a smaller country in Eastern Europe, lies on the Baltic Sea and was once part of the Soviet Union.
Lithuania is now home to a new unit of the German army, known as a brigade. This special unit for the Federal Armed Forces, consisting of a total of 5,000 soldiers, was officially inaugurated recently. The Federal Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, who took office on January 19, 2023, was present for the deployment.
The Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius were in Lithuania for the deployment of the brigade. This marks a significant move for the Federal Armed Forces, as it is the largest project they have undertaken abroad to date.
Moscow, the capital of Russia, has been waging a war against Ukraine for more than two years. Other neighbouring countries of Russia, such as Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland, express concerns about potential attacks. Many countries in Europe feel threatened by Russia, and Lithuania, a member of the European Union since 2004, is no exception.
It's important to note that Russia is a country that spans both Asia and Europe. Although Lithuania shares a border with Russia, most of its population speaks Lithuanian, with Polish and Russian also being spoken in the country.
The deployment of the German brigade to Lithuania is a response to the growing tensions in the region. The Federal Armed Forces is now present in Lithuania, a move that is expected to strengthen the country's defences and provide a deterrent against any potential aggression.
As the situation in Eastern Europe continues to evolve, it is clear that the deployment of the German brigade to Lithuania is a significant development. The euro has been Lithuania's currency since 2015, and the country continues to be an active member of the European Union. The future of the region remains uncertain, but the presence of the German brigade in Lithuania serves as a symbol of solidarity and a commitment to peace and stability in the region.
