German Court Acquits Player in Unlicensed Online Casino Case

A German court has acquitted a player accused of illegal gambling after using unlicensed online casinos. The ruling highlights ongoing tensions between strict domestic regulations and the popularity of international gambling platforms. Since July 2021, only operators with a German license have been allowed to offer online slots and poker legally.

The case centred on a player who accessed online casinos without a German license. The court ruled that the individual had not committed a criminal offence, citing a legal grey area. Judges argued that players could not clearly recognise their actions as illegal, prioritising the principle of legal certainty.

The acquittal does not alter the legal risks for operators without a German license. Licensed providers continue to push for fairer competition, as international platforms bypass strict domestic rules. Meanwhile, players using unlicensed sites still risk financial losses, despite the court’s ruling on individual liability.
