Gauff thrives in the third round of the U.S. Open, while Musetti advances
Venus Williams, aged 45, will take to the court later today at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, playing doubles with Canadian partner Leylah Fernandez. The pair is scheduled for their second-round women's doubles match later on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff, who defeated Magdalena Frech 6-3 6-1 in the third round, advances to the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Gauff showed improvement in her serve during the third round, with four double faults compared to 18 in her first two matches.
In the men's singles, Alexander Zverev, ranked third, will continue his quest for a maiden major against Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Americans hope to end a 22-year men's drought at their domestic major, but only fourth seed Taylor Fritz has punched his ticket for the round of 16 so far. Tommy Paul, the 14th seed, will face Alexander Bublik in the final match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Unfortunately, two of Paul's compatriots, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, exited the tournament on Friday.
Iga Swiatek, the second seed, will headline the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Polish player, who reached the Washington final earlier this year, will face Anna Kalinskaya. It's worth noting that Kalinskaya, ranked 29th, has previously beaten Swiatek on the Dubai hardcourts in 2024.
The match between Cobolli and Musetti was a third-round battle between long-time Italian friends. However, Flavio Cobolli had to retire from the match due to arm issues, allowing Lorenzo Musetti to advance to the next round of the U.S. Open.
Naomi Osaka, who played against Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals of the 2021 US Open, did not feature in this year's tournament as she decided to take a break from the sport.
As the U.S. Open continues, fans and players alike are eager to see who will emerge as champions in the coming days.
