Gathering in Wiesbaden - Ukrainian Wine and a Mutual Business Affair

The 48th Rheingau Wine Week is currently underway in Wiesbaden, Germany, offering a delightful blend of Latin American beats, Riesling tastings, and a lively atmosphere. This year's event is particularly special as it features exciting drops from a region full of history, courage, and new passion – Ukraine.

As part of a city partnership established two years ago as a sign of solidarity after the Russian attack on Ukraine, Kamjanez-Podilsky, Wiesbaden's partner city, is presenting its young wine culture at the Rheingau Wine Week. The partnership wine stand, operated by members of the Wiesbaden Kamjanez-Podilsky Partnership Association and Ukrainians, offers wines from Odessa, the Carpathians, and the Black Sea, which are not readily available in Germany.

The selection at the stand includes six different wines: two sparkling wines, two white wines, one rosé, and a deep red Petit Boucher. Each wine has a unique taste profile. For instance, the Rosé Sekt from the Carpathians is mineralic and aromatic, while the Petit Boucher is intense in aroma, full-bodied in taste, and has a long finish.

Pia Hermanns, a clinical geneticist and daughter of a winemaker, leads the tasting at the partnership wine stand and explains grape varieties, soils, and production methods. The wines from Ukraine have a unique signature due to the climatic conditions in regions like Odessa and the Carpathians, as many of the grape varieties do not grow in Germany.

The Rheingau Wine Week offers a variety of amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all. These include guarded bicycle lockers, childcare, sanitation service, many toilets, new wine stands, a water stand, a lottery and charitable stand, and an exclusive wine glass souvenir.

The proceeds from the wine stand go to funding projects that directly benefit the people in Kamjanez-Podilsky, including aid deliveries, school and kindergarten support, and cultural and sporting encounters. Volunteers put in around 125 hours of stand duty to offer guests not only wine but also a piece of lived solidarity.

Pictures of the Rheingau Wine Week show how enjoyment, music, and good mood come together. The French town that will operate the partner wine booth in 2026 is Ribeauvillé. The Rheingau Wine Week guide, including information about winemakers, event tickets, and the program, can be found online.
