Gargantuan Public Debt of Sh12 Trillion Yields Minimal Results
The national debt in Kenya has reached a record high, surpassing the Sh12 trillion mark, a development that has raised concerns among economists and critics of President William Ruto's administration.
The increase in Kenya's debt has been a subject of concern among President Ruto's critics, who question the sustainability of the current borrowing levels and the lack of visible projects to justify the increased borrowing. Economists have echoed these concerns, noting the lack of tangible projects to back the borrowing.
The government of President Ruto has supported tangible projects such as the development of Konza City with Chinese partnerships focused on digital sector growth. However, critics argue that the overall debt level is unsustainable, with experts warning of the heavy debt service burden consuming a large part of tax revenues and recommending debt relief measures.
The current administration is being criticized for the rising national debt, with opponents pointing to the ongoing criticism of the increased borrowing and lack of visible projects in Kenya under President Ruto's leadership.
Meanwhile, the freedom of expression in Kenya has been shrinking since President Ruto came into power. This development, coupled with the matrimonial property row involving billionaire Peter Munga and his wife, involving a Sh433 million loan case, has added to the growing list of controversies surrounding the Ruto administration.
In a separate development, the Kenyan Supreme Court has stated that the electoral agency has a trust deficit, further fuelling concerns about the state of governance in the country.
Amidst these challenges, President Ruto has a Sh1.4 billion private jet, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by the Kenyan public. The question on many minds is whether the country's resources are being used wisely to address the pressing issues at hand.
In the political arena, Dalmas Otieno's career suffered due to his tendency to go against the Odingas. Otieno, a former ally of President Ruto, was recently expelled from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party over his perceived disloyalty to the President.
As Kenya navigates these challenges, it remains to be seen how the Ruto administration will address the concerns raised by economists and critics alike, and whether it will be able to deliver on its promises to the Kenyan people.
