Moving Forward with New Trains on the Berlin U-Bahn Line - Future of Berlin's Subway Secured: New Vehicles Arrive
Berlin's U-Bahn is undergoing a significant transformation, with the introduction of new trains manufactured by Stadler. The new U-Bahn cars, boasting four doors per car, larger monitors, and more seats than their predecessors, are currently being tested on lines U5 to U9.
The delivery of these new trains is a weekly event, with one train consisting of eight cars delivered each week. By the end of the year, 140 cars of the new JK series will be in service, exclusively on the U2 line. However, due to the ongoing testing and limited availability, passengers who wish to see and ride the new trains may need a bit of luck or patience.
The inaugural ride of the new trains was attended by Kai Wegner (CDU), Franziska Giffey (SPD), Ute Bonde (CDU), and Henrik Falk. The new trains, which are designed for use on the narrow-profile lines U1 to U4, will be followed by the large-profile series in the summer for the other lines.
The new U-Bahn cars are expected to shape the image of Berlin's U-Bahn for the next few decades, as announced by BVG. The first noticeable effects of these changes will be seen around late October, according to BVG.
In a bid to modernise the U-Bahn further, BVG and Stadler have a framework agreement for many more cars. The current delivery date for the large-profile J-series trains for the Berlin U-Bahn, which will be used on line U3 and other lines, is not explicitly found in the search results.
Interestingly, the JK series trains are arriving years late. Older cars from the U2 line will be used to extend trains on the U3 line in the meantime. Only one train of the new JK series is in passenger service this week, with the J series trains not mentioned as being in passenger service this week.
Despite the delay, the new U-Bahn series is now running in Berlin, marking a new chapter for the city's public transportation system. With 484 cars of the two sister series having been ordered, it's clear that Berlin's U-Bahn is set for an exciting future.
