Hamburg, a city known for its rich history and vibrant culture, is making waves in the realm of transportation. The city is transforming into a model region for mobility, with a strong emphasis on digitalization and innovation.

In line with this vision, Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Siemens Mobility have joined forces to digitize and automate S-Bahn trains in Hamburg by 2030. This ambitious project, dubbed Digital S-Bahn Hamburg 2.0, aims to bring about a significant shift in the city's transportation landscape.

The project is backed by a joint investment of €35 million, a testament to the commitment towards this transformative endeavour. Four digital S-Bahn trains are already in operation between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf stations, paving the way for the future.

The focus of this project is to reduce energy consumption by implementing an intelligent traffic management system. This system aims to optimise the use of rolling phases and prevent unnecessary stops on free tracks, potentially reducing power consumption by up to 30%. It also strives to avoid several trains starting on a track at the same time to manage peak loads in power consumption more effectively.

By 2030, these digital S-Bahn trains are also expected to be highly automated, further enhancing efficiency and sustainability. However, a specific detailed timeline for the introduction of this digital and automated S-Bahn in Hamburg 2.0 is yet to be disclosed.

The mobility transition in Hamburg is not limited to S-Bahn trains. The city is also investing in intelligent bus traffic, with around 2 million euros allocated for this purpose. The goal is to create a seamless, efficient, and sustainable public transportation system that caters to the needs of its growing population.

As Hamburg continues to progress in its mobility transition, it is poised to become the national model region for the mobility of tomorrow. The technology developed in Hamburg is expected to be used nationwide later on, making it a beacon of innovation in the field of transportation.

Recently, Hamburg Hochbahn has presented the autonomous minibus "Holon Mover". This development further underscores Hamburg's commitment to digital and autonomous solutions for its transportation needs.

With these initiatives, Hamburg is not just a city of the past, but a city of the future, leading the way in digitalization and innovation in mobility.
