Funding Initiative Kickstarts by Green Potential

Hamburg, a city known for its forward-thinking approach, is taking significant strides towards a greener future. Two key initiatives, the Green Potential Screening and IFB Hamburg, are at the forefront of this movement.

The Green Potential Screening, a project spearheaded by the Authority for Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture (BUKEA) and Hamburgische Investitions- und Förderbank (IFB Hamburg), is focused on evaluating green business models, innovations in resource and energy efficiency, and the circular economy. The initiative aims to foster new ways of thinking and innovations, as stated by Hamburg's Environment Senator, Jens Kerstan, who emphasised the need for swift action and innovative ideas in climate protection.

IFB Hamburg, a funding bank of the city, plays a crucial role in this initiative. It supports housing and economic development, environmental protection, and innovation projects. IFB Hamburg serves as the central point of contact for private individuals, companies, and institutions in Hamburg for all funding offers from the city, the federal government, and the EU.

The Green Potential Screening is part of the funding program "PROFI Umwelt", which contributes to climate and environmental protection through incentives for more sustainable business practices. The funding is available to companies of all sizes and industries with a business location in Hamburg, as well as cooperating Hamburg universities and research institutions.

Many companies lack the resources or expertise to recognise all CO2-saving possibilities or develop new green business models. The Green Potential Screening aims to address these points and show companies concrete action potentials for sustainable products and processes. The first funding decisions are expected to be made in the second quarter of 2025. Project outlines can be submitted to IFB Hamburg by February 28, 2025, and applications by April 30, 2025.

The results of the feasibility studies are intended to serve as a basis for the implementation of innovative research and development projects. Meanwhile, UmweltPartnerschaft Hamburg offers workshops on the circular economy to further equip companies with the knowledge needed to contribute to a greener Hamburg.

In addition to the Green Potential Screening, IFB Hamburg advises on funding for various sectors, including sustainability initiatives. This underscores the bank's broader role in supporting a variety of projects aimed at making Hamburg a resilient city for the future.

One such example is Otto, a retail company that has switched to using fully biodegradable shipping bags, demonstrating the potential impact of these initiatives on local businesses. As Hamburg continues to embrace sustainable practices, it serves as a shining example for cities around the world.
