Frosty warning issued for eastern Latvia

As the day progresses, clouds will increase across Latvia, painting a grey canvas over the country. The sun will only shine occasionally, offering a fleeting glimpse of warmth.

The maximum air temperature during the day will range between +8°C and +13°C, providing a temporary respite from the chill. However, as the sun sets, the mercury will plummet, with temperatures in Zemgale and western Vidzeme dropping to a chilly -2°C overnight.

The eastern part of Latvia will experience even colder temperatures, with lows as low as -5°C in some areas. This frosty night has the potential to cause serious damage or even destroy endurance plant species in widespread areas.

Plant breeders specializing in endurance plants, particularly in regions with an early frost risk such as Vidzeme and Latgale, are especially vulnerable to the severe effects of the upcoming frost event.

To minimize frost damage, plant protection measures such as covering or watering plants in the evening are advised.

Weather alerts are in effect across Latvia. A yellow alert is active in central Latvia and eastern Kurzeme, while an orange alert has been issued for the eastern part of the country.

In Kurzeme, the night will be overcast with more clouds, and there is a possibility of rain in some places. The minimum temperature in Kurzeme overnight will be between +1°C and +5°C.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing weather situation.
